Britain, A.D. 117. After surviving a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, Quintus Dias joins General Virilus and the legendary Ninth Legion on a march into the north. Their orders are to crush the Picts and destroy their leader, Gorlacon, but a devastating guerrilla attack leaves a splinter group of Roman soldiers trapped behind enemy lines, fighting to stay alive.
