In New York Family Court, the lives of three women intersect around a case that alters each of them in unexpected ways. Sara Diaz, a hardworking single mother, has her children taken from her after she is suspected of injuring her son. Ally Fisher, a recent law school graduate, is assigned to represent Sara before Judge Martha Schulman, a seasoned veteran of the Family Court system.
