Penniless Mary Thorne is raised under the care of her uncle, Doctor Thorne, while spending much of her life close to the wealthy world of Greshamsbury Park. As she grows up alongside her rich aunt and cousins and forms a friendship with the family on the nearby estate, Mary must navigate the distance between her own uncertain position and the privileged society around her.
