A year after losing his father in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, nine-year-old Oskar struggles to make sense of his grief. An amateur inventor, Francophile, and pacifist, he discovers a mysterious key he believes his father left for him. Convinced it must open something important, Oskar searches New York City for the lock it fits.
