In an oppressive future, the government controls public opinion by outlawing literature and sending enforcers known as firemen to burn any books they find. Montag is one of these firemen, trained to destroy written works without question. But as he carries out his duty, he begins to doubt the morality of his vocation and the society that depends on it.
