Evelyn, a Southern housewife struggling with a personal crisis, finds unexpected companionship during visits to a nursing home. There she befriends Ninny, an outgoing older woman whose stories open a window onto 1920s Whistle Stop, Alabama, and the lives of Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison, two young women connected by love, hardship, and the Whistle Stop Cafe.
