In late 1930s Bay City, private detective Philip Marlowe is brooding and down on his luck when a glamorous heiress brings him a new case. She wants him to track down her former lover, but the search soon pulls Marlowe into the affairs of a wealthy Californian family, where beauty, money, and buried motives complicate a seemingly simple missing-person investigation.
