As the world moves toward the Second World War, John Halder, a thoughtful and intelligent German professor, tries to see himself as a good man. But as the pressures around him grow, he is gradually drawn into a movement whose consequences are unthinkable, forcing a stark look at how ordinary choices can become part of something far larger and more dangerous.
