After the death of her adoptive mother, Hortense, a successful young black optometrist, begins searching for the woman who gave birth to her. Her research leads to Cynthia, a lonely white factory worker living in poverty in East London. As Hortense makes contact, both women face an unexpected connection shaped by class, race and family secrets.
