London widow Cora Seaborne leaves the city for Essex after hearing reports of a mythical serpent said to be haunting the area. Drawn by curiosity and a scientific skepticism, she investigates the rumors and forms an unexpected bond with the local vicar, who shares her questioning outlook. But as fear spreads and tragedy strikes, the community turns on Cora, accusing her of drawing the creature to them.
