Three years after escaping Daniel Hervey, Inspector John Marlott is found in 1830 London chained and manacled in a cell at Royal Bethlem Hospital, confined to a wing for the criminally insane. As a series of disturbing crimes grips the city, Marlott is drawn back into an investigation that may point to a scientist intent on re-animating the dead.
