At the dawn of the Space Race, the U.S. space program grows from the breaking of the sound barrier to the selection of the Mercury 7 astronauts. Drawn from a group of daring test pilots, seven men prepare to become the first Americans in space, while their seat-of-the-pants instincts clash with the more cautious approach of the engineers guiding the program.
